Support someone through a time of loss

by Dorothy Parkes Centre

As a bereavement and loss group facilitator at Dorothy Parkes, the role is to be the provider of a safe place for the grief work to occur. A facilitator starts and ends the group, provides a copy of the handbook and must be willing to play an active part in the delivery of the sessions. A Facilitator gives members permission to not share before they are ready. These structural components are an important part of the members feeling safe. Group members will not become experts on their grief, but gain a deeper understanding of how grief impacts not only on individuals and their relationships but also the wider community. The facilitator’s role is to establish some of ground rules of the group which include confidentiality and the right to be heard, and safeguard participants whilst in the group.
