Every spring, Swifts return to our towns and cities after flying thousands of miles from Africa where they spend the winter. Swifts prefer to build their nests in buildings across our towns and cities, but over time there have become fewer places they can use and their numbers in the UK are down by over half. Urgent action is needed to stop them disappearing from our skies, so we are building a network of volunteer Swift Champions across the West Midlands to raise awareness of and take direct action for Swifts. There are many different ways you can support Swifts. As one of our Swift Champions you can choose to do whichever actions that you are comfortable doing. Options include: -Reporting Swift sightings using our app ‘Swift Mapper’ or doing regular surveys -Building Swift nest boxes -Working to facilitate nesting opportunities at scale through ‘Swift Streets’ -Growing wildlife-friendly plants and encouraging others to do the same -Responding to planning applications to ensure buildings provide for Swifts -Raising awareness of Swifts in your community through walks, talks or workshops If you can spare some time and are interested in making a difference for Swifts in your local community, we’d love to hear from you. Sandwell Advocacy is a small local charity operating Sandwell Together, a telephone befriending service. Sandwell Together was set up in response to the social isolation and loneliness felt by many of us during the Covid pandemic. Sadly, social isolation and loneliness continue to be an issue for many people and Sandwell Together is committed to continuing to provide this support. Sandwell Together now has a number of people on their waiting list in urgent need of a telephone befriender. Is this something you feel you could do? We are looking for people with kindness, empathy and good listening skills who would like to make a real difference to the lives of others. In return for giving up a small amount of your time each week to make a call from your own home we will offer full training, the opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends and the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing something really worthwhile.

Schools do incredible things to educate young people and help them become compassionate and well-rounded citizens. However, they can’t do this job alone. School governors help to shape school policies and aims, allowing teachers to focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences. Effective governance can positively impact a child’s experience of education. Apply to become a governor by completing our online form. Can all be done remotely from your home/office but you would be welcome to come and report on games if you wish and join other activities.

WaterAid Speakers are trained volunteers that deliver inspiring talks and workshops, to raise awareness about the importance of clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene, to transform peoples’ lives for good. Our Speaker volunteers engage audiences about the important work of WaterAid, inspiring them to take action, as they speak with schools, universities, businesses, youth groups, religious places of worship, service organisations, and many more. To find out more and apply, follow this link - https://www.wateraid.org/uk/get-involved/volunteering/volunteer-as-a-wateraid-speaker Expectation for WaterAid Speakers: •Deliver a minimum of four talks or workshops per year, either online and/or face to face. •Deliver talks or workshops on key days such as: World Water Day on 22 March, World Toilet Day on 19 November, Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May and Global Handwashing Day on 15 October. •Contact new audiences to organise and deliver talk and workshop opportunities. •Complete online Speaker Network training and adhere to volunteer guidance and best practise. •Make use of our public speaking resources (such as PowerPoint presentations) included in our Speaker e-newsletter, emails, and online resource library. •Keep up to date with our key messages, appeals, campaigns, fundraising and volunteering. •Regularly liaise with the Speaker Network team about talks and workshops. •Provide feedback on talks or workshops by completing the online evaluations. •Provide support to new Speakers around their public speaking development. •Demonstrate the WaterAid values including being considerate when representing WaterAid and always leaving others with a positive view of our organisation and the work that we do.
