Make a difference in children’s lives, be a Panel Member!

by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council

Parents express a preference for their child to attend a specific school, but not everyone is successful in securing a place at their chosen school. Everyone refused admission has the right to appeal, which must be considered by an independent appeals panel consisting of three volunteers.

This role is ideal for someone who has a passion for education.
No qualifications or experience needed as you will receive full training and continuous support.
You are not eligible to be a panel member if you have ever been employed by Sandwell MBC or have ever been an elected member for Sandwell MBC.

For an inclusive pool of panel members, we want people from all backgrounds with different experiences and skills.

As a panel member, you will read the appeal paperwork prior to the appeal hearings which take place using Microsoft Teams. You will participate in the appeal hearing where you will listen to the school’s case as to why they believe they cannot accommodate a further pupil, and parents will explain their appeal case for wanting a place at the school. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of both cases to ensure you have all the information you need to help you make your decision and to help you identify whether an error had been made when the application was processed. Once the appeal has ended, the panel will deliberate the appeal in private in the presence of the clerk and will decide whether to allow or refuse the appeal.
