As an Independent Panel Member your role is to recommend the approval/disapproval/place restrictions on new and existing Shared Lives Carers. You have no legal responsibility, but you are there to advise the Registered Manager who will also attend Panel. Reports are sent to you by secure email at least two weeks before the Panel meeting. You then have time to prepare some questions you may wish to ask of the carers and assessor, which are directed by the Panel Chair. There is time set aside at the beginning of Panel for the members to discuss any concerns and there is also de-brief afterwards to share learning and thoughts with the Registered Manager.
Sometimes described as a little bit like foster care for adults, Shared Lives Carers offer true personalised support to adults with additional needs from within their own home - on either a long-term, overnight respite or day session basis.
