Short deadline! Help access to the arts, galleries, museums now!

by VocalEyes

Do you love museums and heritage? Do you care about accessibility? Join a team of 50 volunteer access researchers in a large-scale digital volunteering project that will benefit over 3,000 heritage sites in the UK and their visitors.
You will be helping experts from arts and heritage disability access organisations in an important project that will check the online accessibility information of over 3,000 heritage sites in the UK and then share the research with the museums and heritage sites on how they can improve their access information and support deaf, disabled and neurodivergent visitors.
Each volunteer will be given a list of heritage sites, and you just need to be comfortable finding and navigating their websites and entering data about them into an online form (mostly through multiple choice options).
To find out more and to register interest before 9am Monday 14 March 2022 please go to this link below:

Accessibility

All training and resources will be provided in alternative formats, and access requirements will be accommodated. While you will be volunteering from home, you won’t be alone: all 50 volunteers will be part of a network, supported by VocalEyes and project partner staff on the way, with an online meeting space and regular Zoom conference calls.

Preferred skills

• Enthusiasm
• To be comfortable with searching websites on the internet and filling in online forms (Google Forms). Training and access support will be provided.
• To have your own desktop computer or laptop, as a tablet or phone isn’t suitable for this type of project as you will need to switch between browser/website tabs regularly. As well as access to the Internet.
• Personal experience of experiencing access barriers at heritage sites or other public buildings would be an advantage, and we are actively seeking volunteers who identify as deaf, hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired, disabled or neurodivergent.

Experience gained

1. You will receive training in heritage and online accessibility from access experts VocalEyes, AbilityNet, Autism in Museums, Centre for Accessible Environments and Stagetext, that will help develop knowledge and skills useful if you are seeking a career in heritage.
2. You will build your digital skills and confidence.
3. You will connect with a group of people across the UK working on the project.
4. You can volunteer at any time of day.
5. Later in the year (October to December), you can take part in delivering workshops for heritage staff interested in improving their venue’s online access information and present about the project and its findings from the research.
6. Your name will be listed with other volunteers in the project report, and receive a printed, bound copy of the report.
7. You will receive a reference letter from the Project Director to help with applying for further volunteering or paid work.
